We work closely with farmers and communities to ensure we don’t just deliver the best tasting coffee – but that it is made with care and respect. As part of this journey, our team has worked hard to ensure that 100 per cent of the coffee beans used to manufacture our Nescafé Classic coffee are sustainably grown, thanks to 4C verification.

“Great tasting coffee comes from the hard work of many people. Being one of the world’s leading coffee brand brings with it a huge responsibility, which Nescafé has always embraced.” said Andrew McIver, Nestlé Oceania Head of Beverages.

“We are proud that 100% of the coffee that makes up Nescafé Classic coffee is sustainably grown. From farm to factories and beyond, we are committed to improving the coffee that lands in your cup. We want to ensure that everyone gets to enjoy great tasting, affordable coffee – now and in the future.”

What is 4C verification?

The Common Code for the Coffee Community (4C) is a global organisation that works to establish sustainable coffee production. Together with its partners, 4C creates trustworthy and fair trading right through the supply chain – from farming, to transport, roasting and the manufacturing process.

To achieve 4C verification, an organisation must abide by the Code of Conduct, this includes 27 standard principles that need to be achieved, and 10 unacceptable practices that are to be avoided.

What’s next?

In 2010, we brought our 80 years of global coffee knowledge to the next level, with the launch of The Nescafé Plan. The Nescafé Plan is our global initiative that aims to positively impact our coffee growing communities, while supporting farmers to produce sustainable coffee.

Over the past decade, from Brazil, to Colombia, Côte d'Ivoire, Kenya, Mexico, the Philippines and Vietnam, a broad array of initiatives have helped improve farmers' incomes, reduce the environmental impact of coffee farms and factories and increase rural communities' well-being.

All these efforts are working towards Nestle’s global goal of using 100% responsibly sourced coffee by 2025. In 2020 we sourced nearly 650,000 tonnes of responsibly sourced coffee globally, 75% of our total supplies, and by far the largest volume of responsibly sourced coffee bought by a single buyer. We are well on our way!
